Description
KIPLING (Rudyard). Just Such Stories for Little Ones. Illustrated by the author. Translated by Robert d’Humières and Louis Fabulet. Paris, Librairie Delagrave, 1926. Quarto, paperback (22.5 x 28.8 cm), comprising 1 blank leaf, 1 half-title page, 1 illustrated title page, 205-(1) pp., 1 blank leaf. The first edition of *Just So Stories*, illustrated with drawings by the author, was published in England in 1902. The book was published in France by Delagrave the very next year, but without a collector’s edition, probably because it was regarded as a mere children’s book, which, in the publishers’ view, did not warrant a bibliophile edition. The true nature of the text had probably escaped the publisher’s notice, but gradually the book’s tremendous success and the reactions of readers and critics changed the way it was viewed, establishing it as one of the greatest children’s books ever written. This new edition, consistent with previous ones, was therefore printed in a run of 340 copies in a re-set quarto format. The copy on offer is one of the 200 copies printed on pure-fibre vellum. Foliolation marks on the cover.
