Description
BARTOLI (Pietro Santi). *Veterum sepulcra seu mausolea romanorum et etruscorum, inventa in urbe Roma, aliisque locis celebribus* [...] Leiden, Pierre van der Aa, 1728. Folio, [2] leaves. Ivory half-vellum, smooth spine, title label in dark brown marbled paper (Paul Vié). The illustrations comprise a title vignette, two fine header vignettes and 44 separate plates, some of which are fold-out, depicting 90 figures. A few foxing spots. Marginal water-stains on the final leaves. Pietro Santi Bartoli, born in Perugia in 1635 and died in Rome on 7 November 1700, was an Italian painter and etcher, a pupil of Nicolas Poussin. He engraved a large number of ancient monuments from his own drawings. The composition of the plates recreates the atmosphere of an amateur’s study: drawings, ancient artefacts, sculptures, stelae, engravings and other relics are depicted as if they were gathered together and displayed in the author’s personal collection. Bookplate of Mrs A. de CAILLAVET: Léontine Lippmann, who became Mrs Arman de Caillavet upon her marriage (1844–1910), was the friend, mistress and muse of Anatole France. Her literary salon welcomed some of the leading figures of the Third Republic (writers, politicians, actors, etc.); in particular, she inspired Proust’s character Madame Verdurin (the author of *In Search of Lost Time* was introduced to her salon in 1889).
