BERGIER (Nicolas). History of the Great Roads of the Roman Empire, detailing the origin, development and almost incredible extent of the military roads, paved from the city of Rome to the farthest reaches of its Empire. In which the incredible grandeur and power of the Romans are revealed; together with an explanation of Antoninus’s itinerary and the Peutinger Map. Brussels, Leonard, 1728. 2 volumes in-4, marbled calfskin, ornately ribbed spine, title and volume number labels in red morocco, triple gilt fillet on the edges, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Caps and corners worn, clasps partly split, a few scuffs. The illustrations consist of a vignette repeated on the title pages, a frontispiece by B. Picart, a portrait of Prince Philippe François de Rubempré, a portrait of Bergier, four separate plates (three of which are folded), and the Peutinger Table presented here as eight successive folded plates. This monumental map (approximately 4 metres long), covering the entire Roman Empire as far as China, is a reproduction made at the end of the 12th century of a copy produced around 350, the original of which is even older. It was rediscovered in the early 16th century in Worms (Germany) and entrusted to Konrad Peutinger, who gave it his name. This is the second edition of this highly regarded work (Brunet I, 786, which also cites the first edition of 1622—which he considers of no value—in comparison with this second edition of 1728 and the third of 1736, also published by Léonard in Brussels). The author was one of the early pioneers of our national archaeology. He sought to present the example of Roman roads to those responsible for restoring French roads in the early 18th century.
