[GUASCO (Abbé Octavien de)]. On the Use of Statues by the Ancients. A Historical Essay. Brussels: de Boubers, 1768. Quarto, paperback, with a modern marbled paper cover. First edition of this work, written from a philosophical rather than an artistic perspective. It is adorned with a title vignette, a heraldic banner and 14 plates engraved by De Boubers. Yellowed paper. The author, a Piedmontese scholar whose works earned him admission to the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, became friends with Montesquieu, whose *Lettres familières*, published in Florence in 1767, are a eulogy to Guasco.
