Description
WESSELING (Peter). *Vetera romanorum itineraria, sive Antoni Augusti itinerarium*, with the complete notes of Jos. Simler, Hieron. Surita, and And. Schott [...] Amsterdam, Wetstein & Smith, 1735. In-4, gilt vellum, ribbed spine decorated with heraldic ironwork (featuring a tower), red title label, double gilt roulette border with heraldic fleurons in the spandrels, large gilt coat of arms in the centre bearing the figure of Pallas, traces of lacing (contemporary binding). First edition in Latin, with some passages in Greek, of one of the most important collections devoted to the roads and geography of the Roman Empire. The philologist Peter Wesseling (1692–1764) compiled, edited and annotated the principal ancient sources relating to the Roman Empire’s road network: the Itinerary of Antoninus (Antonini Augusti Itinerarium), a directory of the Empire’s roads and distances; the Itinerarium Hierosolymitanum (or Bordeaux Itinerary), regarded as the oldest account of a Christian pilgrimage to the Holy Land; and the Synecdemus by Hierocles the Grammarian. Wesseling adds an extensive critical apparatus based on the manuscripts and earlier works of Simler, Surita and Schott. Some minor signs of wear. Beautiful binding bearing the coat of arms of the city of Middelburg (Netherlands).
