BURET (Antoine-Eugène). On the Poverty of the Working Classes in England and France; on the nature of poverty, its existence, its effects, its causes, and the inadequacy of the remedies employed to date; with an indication of the appropriate means to free societies from it. Paris-Leipzig, Jules Renouard and Company, 1841. 2 vols. in-8, [2] ff., viij-432 pp.; vij–492 pp., fawn half-basane with corner pieces, smooth spines decorated with gilt fillets, garlands and fleurons, speckled edges (contemporary binding). Waterstains, small wormholes at the end of vol. II. A rare first edition. This is one of the most significant contributions on poverty on both sides of the Channel during the 1840s. Published a year after René Villermé’s magnum opus and four years before Friedrich Engels’s works, this book provided both Marx and Proudhon with the factual evidence upon which they built their theories. Unfortunately, this is the author’s only work of any significance: a brilliant disciple of Simonde de Sismondi, Eugène Buret died prematurely in 1842 at the age of 31.
