[COSTER (Joseph-François)]. Letters from a citizen to a magistrate, on the reasons why trade in the duchies of Lorraine and Bar should be exempt from the proposed general tariff for the Kingdom of France. Sl, 1762. In-8, [4]-420 pp., Bradel-style cardboard binding in marbled paper (modern binding). Minimal paper restoration to the upper corners of the first folios, but a fine copy. The only edition of this plea for free trade, though limited to the Duchy of Lorraine, which was not yet fully under French rule but was already administered by France under the nominal authority of King Stanislas. Joseph-François Coster (1729–1813) of Nancy had embarked on studies in political economy whilst running the family bank. He had already won the science prize at the Academy of Nancy in 1759 for a speech on ‘Lorraine as a trading region’, and continued to take an interest in this field. The Sovereign Court of Nancy appointed him as its secretary and commissioned him to draft memoranda in defence of the province, its privileges and its institutions. (INED, 1205.)
