Description
[DETOEUF (Auguste)]. Remarks by a Confectioner by O.-L. Barenton. Paris, Éditions du Tambourinaire, 1937. In-4, red half-shagreen with corner pieces, spine with four raised bands, gilt title and gilt head, cover (soiled) and spine preserved. First edition of this collection of aphorisms published under the pseudonym O. L. Barenton. The real author is Auguste Detœuf, a graduate of the École Polytechnique, industrialist and future director of Alsthom. Beneath the light-hearted guise of a confectioner’s musings, the work offers a satire on the worlds of business, industry, money, power and human nature, striking a balance between moralistic wit, an employer’s sense of humour and economic reflection. Ex-libris J.M.
