Description
DUPIN (Charles). The Productive and Commercial Forces of France. Paris, Bachelier, 1827.
2 volumes in-4, marbled calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, superlibris ‘The Society of the Writers to the Signet’ (contemporary English binding). Spines split or weakened. A few rare small foxing spots.
First edition of this important work by Baron Charles Dupin (1784–1873), an engineer, mathematician and economist; a comprehensive two-volume statistical survey devoted to agriculture, industry, trade, transport and public education. A true economic portrait of France during the Restoration, the work compares the resources and development of the departments and is famous for having popularised the distinction between a more industrialised and educated northern France and a more rural southern France. It constitutes one of the first major French syntheses of economic statistics applied to the country as a whole.
