[FORBONNAIS (François Véron Duverger de)]. Economic Principles and Observations. Amsterdam, Marc-Michel Rey, 1767. 2 vols., small 8vo, [3] folios, pp. III–X, 316 pp., with [1] folio of errata between pp. 160 and 161; [3] folios, 284 pp., with 4 fold-out tables (all in Volume I), marbled fawn half-calf, ornate ribbed spine, red title labels, vellum corners, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). Heraldic bookplate, partly torn away. A very rare first edition of this manifesto in which Forbonnais (1722–1800) proclaimed his opposition to physiocracy. It is divided into four parts, the first of which alone constitutes a general theoretical exposition. The second part is entitled *Observations on the Economic Table* and critiques this summary presentation published in 1759 in Versailles itself by the ‘pope’ of physiocracy. The third part has its own title, *Observations on the Entries ‘Grains’ and ‘Farmer’ in the *Encyclopédie**, and again constitutes a critique of Quesnay’s ideas set out in these two entries. The fourth part, for its part, deals exclusively with the land register in the Duchy of Milan. (INED 4439.) A fine copy.
