Description
FOURIER (Charles). Treatise on Domestic and Agricultural Association. Paris: Bossange Père; P. Mongie aîné; London: Martin Bossange, 1822. 2 vols., in-8, LXXX-592 and VIII-648 pp., red half-shagreen with long grain and corner pieces, smooth spine decorated with garlands and gilt fillets (Lavaux and Laurenchet). Spine faded. Foxing. Marginal water stains at the end of volume 1. First edition of Charles Fourier’s magnum opus, published in 1822 with the support of Just Muiron. Under this modest title, the theorist sets out his entire doctrine of universal harmony and lays the foundations of utopian socialism, in a work characterised by a visionary and exuberant style, marked by a profusion of neologisms and a radical critique of society and commerce. This copy is enhanced by Fourier’s autograph signature on the reverse of the half-title page. Volume I contains the ‘Supplement to the Preface’, paginated LXV to LXXX, which is found in very few copies. Included: Table of Contents for the *Treatise on Domestic-Agricultural Association, or Industrial Attraction*. Paris, Bossange père, P. Mongie aîné; London, Martin Bossange, 1823. In-8, 16 pp. First edition of this curious text, part supplement, part index, intended to complement the two volumes of *The Domestic-Agricultural Association*, published the previous year. A fine copy.
