Description
[GRASLIN (Jean-Joseph-Louis)]. An Analytical Essay on Wealth and Taxation, refuting the new economic doctrine, which provided the Royal Agricultural Society of Limoges with the principles for a programme it published on the effect of indirect taxes. London, and available in Paris and Nantes from Guillyn and from the widow Vatar, 1767. In-8, [6] ff., xij-408 pp., marbled fawn calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, title page, triple gilt fillet framing on the covers, gilt fleurons at the corners, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Slight wear to the corners. First edition. Published following the competition launched in 1767 by the Royal Agricultural Society of Limoges, this treatise by Jean-Joseph-Louis Graslin (1728–1790) constitutes a vigorous critique of the physiocratic doctrine. Asserting that labour, and not agriculture alone, is the true source of wealth, it anticipates several ideas developed a few years later by Adam Smith on industry, trade and taxation. (INED 2126.) A fine copy.
