[LE TROSNE (Guillaume-François)]. On Provincial Administration and Tax Reform. Basel, n.p., 1779. In-4, X-661 pp., 24 pp., marbled calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, gilt roulette framing the covers, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Very slight scuffs on the covers. A very rare first edition of Guillaume-François Le Trosne’s principal economic treatise, based on a paper presented to the Academy of Toulouse. Advocating a radical reform of provincial administration and taxation, particularly the privileges of the clergy, the work was banned in 1780 and confiscated. Copies containing the 24 pages of additions (Manière de simplifier le plan proposé), printed separately, are extremely rare. Guillaume-François Le Trosne (1728–1780), the most overlooked of the physiocrats, is also the most profound: a friend of Turgot, he proposed, well before the Revolution, the complete abolition of what was known as ‘feudalism’.
