Description
[MIRABEAU (Victor Riqueti de)]. Theory of Taxation. Sl, sn, 1760.
In-4, VIII-336 pp., pale calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, title page in green morocco, triple gilt fillet framing on the covers, papyrus stamp on the corners, gilt edges (contemporary binding). A faint mark on part of the second cover, of no consequence. A few foxing spots, slightly more pronounced on certain leaves.
A rare first edition. This is the first work in which the Marquis de Mirabeau, having recently embraced physiocratic theories, sets out the doctrine of his school. Although it earned its author a brief imprisonment in the Vincennes dungeon (eight days in December 1760), the book was a great success, precisely because it was very much in line with public opinion: criticising the tax system in force and denouncing the long-unpopular farmers-general, it set out conditions for fair taxation and revenue collection. His ideas took root in people’s minds throughout the second half of the 18th century, and were commonly expressed during the great financial crisis that brought about the end of the Ancien Régime. (INED 3209. Kress 5883.) A very fine copy.
