Description
MOREAU (Jacob-Nicolas). Principles of Morality, Politics and Public Law, drawn from the history of our monarchy, or Discourse on the History of France. Dedicated to the King. Paris, Royal Printing Office, 1777–1789.
21 vols. in-8, fawn calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, red edges (contemporary binding).
The complete set.
An ardent defender of the French monarchy, going against the political thinking of the time, Jacob-Nicolas Moreau set out to provide a history of France from Clovis to Saint Louis. Here he pens a veritable hymn to the monarchy at the very moment when its very principles were being called into question by philosophers; indeed, he would be attacked for his defence of despotism and arbitrary rule.
A very rare complete set. Publication was interrupted by the events of the Revolution, although the author had planned a work comprising 40 volumes.
Heraldic ex-libris: E. P. Le Fors de Chessimont. A fine copy.
