Description
RICARDO (David). On the Principles of Political Economy and Taxation; translated from the English by F. S. Constancio; with explanatory and critical notes by M. Jean-Baptiste Say. Paris, J.-P. Aillaud, 1819. 2 vols. in-8, x-[2]-431 and vj-375 pp., half havana sheepskin, smooth, decorated spines, black title and volume number pages, vellum corners, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Two cap bands trimmed, spines slightly rubbed, corners worn. A rare first French edition of this important work by David Ricardo (1772–1823), one of the major texts in economic thought. The theory of value he develops is one of the starting points for Marx’s analysis. He was the first scientific economist, going beyond the methods of Smith—who was nevertheless his inspiration—and proceeding rigorously, sometimes with the aid of mathematical modelling, which was destined for a brilliant future in the field of economic analysis. Its first English edition, published in 1817, had a print run of only 750 copies, which explains its rarity.
