Description
[ROUILLÉ D'ORFEUIL (Augustin or Gaspard-Louis)]. L'Ami des François. Constantinople, n.p., 1771. A substantial 8vo volume, 793 pp., [2] ff., with an inset plate, marbled fawn calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with gilded panels and coats of arms, red title page, coats of arms in the centre of the covers, red edges (contemporary binding). Corners damaged. First edition of this extensive programme of reforms drawn up at the heart of the administrative machinery of the Ancien Régime by the highly popular Intendant of Châlons, in the form of a political utopia: a shipwrecked man lands on an island (the land of the Sérosages) where an ideal government reigns, which is proposed as a model for France, addressing all subjects: population, luxury, maritime trade, industry, and agriculture—which is the true wealth of a kingdom; Rouillé d’Orfeuil seeks to ban the lottery, large estates, prostitution, secondary schools, etc. (INED, 3938.) A copy belonging to Anne-Charles-Sigismond de Montmorency-Luxembourg (1737–1803), with alternating gilt lions and alerions on the spine and in the spandrels on the covers (see OHR 832 for the full coat of arms). The volume subsequently belonged to the Marquis de Biencourt, with an ex-libris vignette pasted onto the front endpapers.
