Description
SAY (Horace). A History of Trade Relations between France and Brazil, and General Considerations on Currencies, Exchange Rates, Banks and Foreign Trade. Paris, Guillaumin, 1839.
In-8, red half-maroquin, ribbed spine, marbled edges (binding signed by Lortic).
First edition.
The illustrations consist of three plates engraved from drawings by J. Blumenthal (map of Rio de Janeiro Bay, map of Bahia and Todos Os Santos Bay, plan of Pernambuco), a fold-out synoptic table showing exchange rates and trade in Rio de Janeiro from 1808 to 1839, and a colour-enhanced fold-out map of Brazil.
An interesting overview of Brazil’s history and economy, and its links with France, with particular attention paid to the role played by slavery and the need for its abolition.
At the end of the volume are tables showing imports of coffee, cocoa, cabinet-making timber, leather and horns.
This copy is enhanced by an autograph dedication signed by the author to Natalis Rondot, a French economist, art historian and silk industrialist. The last two letters of the name have been cut off during binding.
A fine copy in a signed binding.
