In-12, [6]–264 pp., red half-basane, ribbed spine, speckled head, original printed cover preserved (with a paper restoration on the back cover) (Emile Babin (Lille)). A fine copy. First edition in book form, following a pre-publication in 1843 in the *Revue indépendante*. Published in 1848 at the model printing house founded by Pierre Leroux in Boussac with the support of George Sand, this major work of French socialism sets out a wide-ranging political and social analysis. A contemporary of the Communist Manifesto, it defends socialist ideals without proposing a programme of revolutionary action. A copy belonging to Edgard Depitre, with an ex-libris vignette pasted onto the front endpapers.
