Description
STEWART (James). An Inquiry into the Principles of Political Economy, or An Essay on the Science of the Internal Administration of Free Nations, in which special attention is given to population, agriculture, trade, industry, currency, coinage, interest on money, bank transactions, foreign exchange, public credit, and taxation. Paris, Printed by Didot the Elder, 1789–1790. 5 vols. in-8, XLIV-459, VIII-499, XLII-[2]-431, VIII-456 and VIII-569 pp., red half-basane, plain spine, gilt fillets (19th-century binding). The only French translation, by Étienne de Senovert, and a rare copy. James Denham Stewart (1712–1780) (or Jacques Steuart), a contemporary of Adam Smith, put forward a theory of political economy that was the exact opposite of that of his famous rival, as it was based on a rigorous and reasoned development of protectionism. Both Malthus and Marx regarded him as one of the greatest economic thinkers of his generation. (Kreiss, p. 5268.) A fine copy.
