Description
VILLENEUVE-BARGEMON (Alban de). Christian Political Economy, or Studies on the Nature and Causes of Poverty in France and Europe, and on the Means of Alleviating and Preventing It. Paris, Paulin, 1834. 3 vols. in-8, [4]-511, [4]-652 and [4]-642 pp., with 8 separate maps and plans, red half-shagreen, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding). Rare foxing. First edition of this important work on ways to reduce poverty. A prefect during the Empire and subsequently the Restoration, Alban de Villeneuve-Bargemont (1784–1850) acquired, through his numerous postings, a thorough understanding of social realities. A Member of Parliament from 1830 onwards, he was one of the first to denounce the excesses of industrialisation and, in 1841, secured the passing of the first French law regulating child labour. A fine copy.
