A reprint of an anonymous pamphlet published without a place or date (c. 1660). Paris, Isidore Liseux, 1876. In-12, ivory-coloured vellum with flaps, calligraphic title, laced closure and buttons. A curious anonymous pamphlet from the 17th century, reprinted here by Isidore Liseux, providing a statistical overview of the French clergy. Order by order, the author lists bishops, priests, monks and nuns, outlines the origins of each congregation, estimates its numbers and resources, before questioning, often with biting irony, its actual usefulness.
