Description
Burgundy – FOURNIER (Dominique). Description of the holy grottoes of the former Abbey of Saint-Germain d’Auxerre. New edition, revised and expanded to include a historical note and an archaeological note by Mr Quantin, archivist for the Yonne department, a plan of the crypts, annotations and the liturgy of Saint-Germain. Auxerre, Guillaume-Maillefer; Paris, Didron, 1846.
In-12, XXIX-120-22-[6] pp., with 3 plates, two of which are fold-outs, half-blonde sheepskin, ribbed spine with gilt compartments decorated with vine leaves, gilt fillet on the covers, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Minor scuffs, but a fine copy.
In the 18th century, Saint-Germain Abbey in Auxerre was as illustrious as Saint-Martin de Tours and equally renowned as a place of pilgrimage and miracles.
Bound together:
I. [BOLDORINI (Giuseppe):] Description of the façade and interior of Milan Cathedral. Milan, Louis de Jacques Pirola, 1838, 58 pp. First edition of this monograph, which was frequently reprinted until 1874. It contains no illustrations, unlike many of the subsequent editions.
II. MADROLLE (Antoine): The Magnificence of the Greatest Man in the Universe: to demonstrate God’s own devotion to each and every one of us. An expanded edition of one of the magnificences of religion, by A. Madrolle. Paris, Hivert, Waille and Company, Gaume frères, undated [1841], 43 pp. The ‘greatest man in the universe’ is Bernard of Clairvaux, according to Mr Madrolle.. He was an amiable ‘literary madman’ (1791–1861), a lawyer and, incidentally, the owner of the Château de Vannaire from 1832 to 1846. He ended up as an enlightened follower of the Vintras sect.
