Description
[DESPORTES (Philippe)]. The Psalms of David set to French verse by Philippe Des-Portes, Abbot of Thiron. Rouen, Raphaël du Petit Val, 1611. Small 12mo, marbled half-basane, plain spine with decoration (19th-century binding). Split joints. Nicknamed ‘the French Tibullus’, Philippe Desportes (1546–1606), Abbot of Thiron, reader to the King’s chamber and Councillor of State, was the official poet to Henry III. (Brunet II, 648.) Ex-libris stamp on the title page, engraved ‘Babaut’. Ex-libris ‘J.M.’.
