MARIGNY (Jacques CARPENTIER de). *Le Pain Bénit*. n.p., n.d., 1673. In-16, paperback, with a contemporary slipcase (covered with a modern blue cover). A rare first edition of this satirical poem in verse, in which the Abbé de Marigny scorns, with biting wit, the churchwardens (lay administrators) of his parish, who accused him of neglecting his duties. Marigny responds to these criticisms with a scathing satire in which he ridicules their hypocrisy, their pettiness and their pretensions to governing parish life. The text forms part of the 17th-century tradition of burlesque and polemic, in the vein of ecclesiastical quarrels and satires on social mores. The work enjoyed some success and prompted several contemporary responses. The Abbé de Marigny was one of the most prolific satirists and polemicists in the camp opposed to Mazarin. His ballads, triolets and ‘mazarinades’ mocked the key figures in the conflict. Closely associated first with Cardinal de Retz and then with the Prince of Condé, he kept pace with the political developments of the movement and subsequently undertook various diplomatic or secret missions in the service of Condé.
