Description
PICART (Bernard). A General History of the Ceremonies, Manners and Religious Customs of All the Peoples of the World. Paris, Rollin fils, 1741. 7 folio volumes, marbled havana calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, title label and volume number in red and lemon-coloured morocco, fillets framing the covers (contemporary binding). The illustrations consist of a frontispiece, a decorative motif repeated on the title pages, 41 headpieces, 41 initials and 23 engraved tailpieces, and 227 engraved plates outside the text, including 27 double plates and 4 fold-out plates. Complete according to the list of plates at the end of the volume, but with an additional plate on the cemetery of Saint-Médard and the convulsionaries in volume 4. A different edition from that published in Amsterdam between 1733 and 1736. Published under the supervision of Abbé Banier, it reproduces most of the plates but the text has been revised and supplemented by Abbé Lemascrier. A good copy. Minor signs of wear to the bindings.
