WOLLASTON (William). An Outline of Natural Religion [...] with a supplement and other substantial additions. The Hague, Swart, 1726. In-4, xix-[1]-442-[6] pp. Contemporary cold-stamped vellum (a few stains). First edition of the French translation of the principal work by the English philosopher and moralist William Wollaston (1659–1724), who played a significant role in the development of rationalist thought in the 18th century. After studying at Cambridge and a brief career in the clergy, he devoted himself chiefly to philosophical reflection. *The Religion of Nature Delineated* (1722) enjoyed widespread success and exerted a lasting influence on the moral philosophy of the Enlightenment. In it, Wollaston defends the idea of a “natural religion”, founded not on revelation but on universal reason. In his view, morality and religion stem from the same principle: the pursuit of the good in accordance with truth. He thus defines evil as the negation of the truths of the natural order and good as their recognition and putting into practice. These ideas helped to shape European deist thought and strongly influenced Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Numerous lines of verse (some restored) and old water stains. Ex-libris of J. Guedes da Silva.
