Brown calfskin over cold-stamped wooden boards, ribbed spine (contemporary binding). Binding badly damaged. First edition of the ‘Summa Angelica’, a major work by Angelo Carletti of Chivasso (1411–1495), a theologian of the Order of Friars Minor. It was printed in the author’s hometown and is here preserved in a contemporary binding. Comprising 659 entries arranged in alphabetical order, this veritable dictionary of moral theology, inspired by John of Fribourg’s “Summa Confessorum”, enjoyed immense success and saw no fewer than 31 editions before 1520, the year in which the work was publicly burnt in Wittenberg by Martin Luther, who regarded it as one of the principal symbols of Catholic orthodoxy. Early handwritten notes on the endpapers. Bookplate bearing the seal of an Italian religious congregation (S. Francisco di Pietra Santa). Bookplate bearing the seal of Paul Chapuy, mining engineer.
