Description
BEDE. Martyrologium Venerabilis Bedae Presbyteri. Antwerp, Plantin, 1564. In-16, 191 pp. Black half-shagreen, plain spine with decorative lettering, gilt title (bound c. 1820). A fine copy of this Latin martyrology attributed to the Venerable Bede: a calendar of saints, martyrs and confessors celebrated day by day throughout the liturgical year. Bede, known as the Venerable (Beda Venerabilis), was an English monk of the late 7th and early 8th centuries, regarded as the ‘Father of English History’; his translations of the Greek and Latin works of the early Church Fathers played an important role in the development of Christianity in England.
