BOAISTUAU (Pierre). Wondrous Tales drawn from various famous authors, both Greek and Latin, sacred and secular. Paris, Widow of Guillaume Cavellat, 1597–1598.
6 tomes in 2 vols., in-16 format, comprising (11)-191-(3) folios, 120-(4) pages; 372-(3) pp, 80-(4) pp., 2 blank folios, 159-(1) pp., 91-(3) pp., glossy white calfskin, smooth decorated spine, title, volume number and date labels, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, interior roulette, filleted edges, gilt edges (early 19th-century binding).
A collection of fantastical tales featuring wonders, monsters, demons and sorcerers. The first of the six volumes is by Pierre Boaistuau and the following four by Claude de Tesserant, François de Belleforest, Rodolphe Hoyer and Arnaud Sorbin; the final volume is signed I.D.M. (Jean de Marconville).
An ornate edition featuring 107 half-page woodcuts, a fold-out illustration (a magic knife) in the sixth volume, 8 printer’s marks (6 on the title pages, 2 repeated at the end of each volume), initials and tailpieces. Volumes 1 and 6 are dated 1598; the other four are dated 1597.
Ex-libris bearing the combined coat of arms of the Le Vicomte and de Toustain de Richebourg families (Normandy) with the motto ‘Le Visconte é l’énor’.
Headbands partially torn off, small holes in the lower edge of the second volume, worn corners, a small tear on the fold-out plate; otherwise a fine copy, though with narrow margins (Brunet, I, 982–983).
