BUDÉ (Guillaume). *Commentarii Linguae Graecae*, by Guillaume Budé, Royal Councillor and Royal Master of the Library. Cologne: Published and printed by Johannes Soteris, 1530.
In-4 (29 x 19.5 cm), (28)-595-(5) pp., soft vellum with flaps, spine with three raised bands, handwritten title on the spine, laces (contemporary binding).
A rare second edition of the Commentaries on the Greek Language by Guillaume Budé (1467–1540), first published in Paris by Josse Bade the previous year (1529).
A fine impression in Greek and Roman type, printed at the Cologne press of Johannes Scoter with his printer’s mark on the title page; engraved initials, index. A second edition by Johann Bebel was published in Basel the same year.
Provenance: the library of Gelas Hieber, a hermit of Saint Augustine (1671–1731), with his engraved bookplate ‘M.F. Gela SII Hieber ord.er S.Augus.’ A Bavarian Augustinian, Johann Hieber (1670–1731) was one of the most famous preachers of his time. In 1720, he co-founded *Parnassus Boicus*—Bavaria’s first cultural journal—with Eusèbe Amort; he served as its editor and published numerous articles in it, notably on the reform of the German language.
A fine copy in its original binding. The front section has been previously restored along the inner margin; the first few leaves are slightly foxed. (Brunet I, 1374 (for the first edition).)
