Description
CALVIN (John). Sermons on the Epistle of St Paul the Apostle to the Galatians. Geneva, François Perrin, 1563. In-8, (8)-837-(1) pp. (marked *⁴, a–z⁸, A–Z⁸, Aa–Ff⁸, Gg³), brown morocco leather decorated with a rich interlaced design on the covers and spine, framed by a double gilt border, gilt interior edging, gilt edges (Hans Asper). First edition published by François Perrin in Geneva, bearing his printer’s mark of two doors surrounded by the motto ‘Enter through the narrow gate, for the wide gate and broad way lead to destruction’. A collection compiled from Denis Raguenier’s copies of the 43 sermons by Jean Calvin (1509–1564) on Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians (or ‘Galatians’, according to another version of the title page), preached between 14 November 1557 and May 1558. The introduction to the collection is the French translation of the Latin introduction to the commentary on the same Epistle. Provenance: the library of the historian of Protestantism Ernest Stroehlin (1844–1907), Doctor of Theology and Professor of the History of Religion at the University of Geneva. A very fine interlaced binding by Hans Asper, a Genevan bookbinder active from 1874, modelled on the style of 16th-century Parisian decorative bindings. The copy is trimmed slightly short, with around twenty leaves restored at the margins. The final blank leaf (marked Gg4) is missing. (Bibliotheca Calviniana, II, 63/21.)
