CHYTRAEUS (David). History of the Confession of Augsburg, containing the principal treatises and ordinances drawn up for the religion, when Elector John, Duke of Saxony, together with the cities and other Protestant princes, presented their Confession of Faith (included herein) to Emperor Charles V at the Imperial Diet held at Augsburg in 1530. Compiled by Dr David Chytreus, Professor of Humanities at the University of Rostock, and newly translated into French by Luc le Cop. Antwerp, Arnould Coninx, 1582. In-4, (8)-835-(5) pp. (sign. *4, A-Nnnnn4), stiff ivory-coloured vellum with flaps and laces (contemporary binding). Second French edition of the Augsburg Confession, based on the Latin edition of 1531, translated by Luc Le Cop (or Le Coq) and ‘included’ in the collection by the Lutheran theologian and German historian David Chytraeus (1530–1600), first published in Latin (1578), then translated into German (1580) and finally into French (1582). The first French edition of the Confession appeared in 1561 under the title Confession of Faith presented to Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Augsburg (Brunet, II, 219). Drafted mainly by Philip Melanchthon with Luther’s collaboration and presented to Charles V at the Diet of Augsburg (1530), the Augsburg Confession is the founding text of Lutheranism. Despite its conciliatory tone, it was rejected by Catholic theologians, leading to a hardening of Luther’s stance and the formation of the Schmalkaldic League. Revised by Melanchthon in 1540, then restored to its original version in 1580, it remains the principal symbol of faith for the Lutheran Churches. A very fine copy in contemporary vellum.
