Description
DU PINET (Antoine). Tax on incidental items from the Pope’s shop, in Latin and French. With annotations on the decrees of the Councils and Canons, both ancient and modern, for the verification of the discipline formerly observed in the Church. By A. D. P. [Lyon], [Jean Saugrain], 1564. In-8, 173-(15) pp. 1 blank leaf, soft vellum, title label, traces of laces (contemporary binding) First edition. First French translation by the Reverend Antoine du Pinet. The text details the tax introduced by the Chancellery of Rome, the first Latin publication of which dates from 1471. This tax, so shameful that even Catholics have denied its existence, sets a price for absolution from rape, incest and the most abominable crimes. A scathing pamphlet against the venality of ecclesiastical offices, indulgences and the absolution of the worst depravities – all put on a price list. The title page is adorned with a satirical woodcut vignette depicting the Pope’s shop, where the faithful come to buy indulgences. The *Journal de l’Estoile* (Michaud and Poujoulat edition, p. 427) states: ‘B… sold me a wicked little booklet which I found by chance in his shop, entitled: *Taxe des parties casuelles*. Lyon, 1564. I had been looking for one for a long time to replace the one I burnt on St Bartholomew’s Day, fearing it might burn me.” A fine copy in its original binding. (Baudrier, IV, 338–339.)
