ERASMUS & CYPRIAN (Saint). The Works of the Venerable Caecilius Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage, corrected of countless errors, with the addition of several treatises from the most ancient manuscripts, which had hitherto been unavailable, and with those passages removed which appeared to have been falsely inscribed, together with brief annotations. And all this has been accomplished for us through his immense labour by Erasmus of Rotterdam, a man born to the finest of pursuits. Published in the illustrious city of Basel, by the Frobenian Press, 1521. In-folio (340 x 215 mm), (24)-515-(1) pp. (32) pp. (marked a–z, A–Y6–Z8, Aa8), index, half-vellum cold-stamped on wooden boards decorated with foliage and figures of saints, spine with three raised bands, handwritten title on the gutter, two clasps (contemporary binding). Second edition dated November 1521, prepared by Erasmus (1466–1536) with his dedication to Cardinal Lorenzo Pucci, of the works of Cyprian of Carthage, Father of the Church (c. 200–258), first published by Johannes Froben (c. 1460–1527) in Basel in February 1520. Erasmus was then staying with Froben, his printer in Basel, who not only published his works but also the patristic writings that the theologian helped to bring to light: the previous edition of Saint Cyprian, printed in Paris in 1512, was extensively revised, amended and expanded by the great humanist from Rotterdam. The title page is set within a decorative frame, and the dedication within a second frame featuring flowers and putti; both were wood-engraved by Ambrosius Holbein (c. 1494–1519), as were the ornate drop caps and initials. A fine copy with wide margins, set in a very beautiful example of Renaissance Basel binding, a replica of which is held at the Bibliothèque Sainte Geneviève, based on a collection of humanist works including a print by Johann Froben dated 1517 (ref. 4° R 999 INV 1215 RES). Handwritten bookplate on the title page; a few marginal notes in ink from the period. A few foxing spots; extensive water stain on the upper endpaper.
