Description
GOULART (Simon). The Memoirs of the League under Henry III & Henry III, or Separate Collections of Countless Memorable Details Concerning the Affairs of the League, from the year 1576 to the year 1598. No place, 1602–1604–1598–1599. 6 vols., small 8vo, vellum with small flaps, plain spine decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons (contemporary binding). A rare complete collection of the work by Simon Goulard the Elder (1543–1628), a Protestant theologian and polemicist who had been based in Geneva since 1566. Originally comprising three volumes, these *Petits mémoires sur la Ligue* were regularly expanded with new instalments as the revolt unfolded. Provenance: Charlotte-Louise of Hanau-Münzenberg (1597–1649), daughter of Philippe-Louis II of Hanau-Münzenberg and Catherine of Belgium, Princess of Orange-Nassau; handwritten ex-libris at the front of the five volumes. Guyot the Elder, printer in Orléans (label on each volume). A good copy. Traces of water damage in Volume I, a few wormholes.
