GUEVARA (Antonio de). *The Clock of Princes*, together with the highly renowned work of Marcus Aurelius, compiled by Don Antoine de Guevare, Bishop of Guadix and Mondovedo, Translated in part from Castilian into French by the late N. de Herberay, Lord of Les Essars, and subsequently revised and corrected anew, in addition to the other previous editions previously printed. Paris, Nicolas Bonfons, 1580. In-8 (16 x 10 cm), (32)-395 leaves, 1 blank leaf, brown morocco, decorated ribbed spine, double fillet framing on the covers (contemporary binding). A new edition revised by Nicolas Herberay des Essars and dedicated to Cardinal de Givry, of *L’Horloge des Princes*—a French translation published in 1531 by René Berthault de la Grise of *El Relox de los Principes*, which had appeared two years earlier in Madrid. Antonio de Guevara (1481–1545), preacher and historiographer to Charles V, composed for him a biography of Marcus Aurelius featuring apocryphal letters as a portrait of the ideal prince. It was to this work that La Fontaine alluded when quoting Marcus Aurelius in the fable *The Peasant of the Danube*. A fine print by Nicolas Bonfons bearing his printer’s mark on the title page. The same print run was produced simultaneously for Abel L’Angelier (Balsamo, Abel L’Angelier, 50). Handwritten bookplate on the reverse of the last endpaper: ‘This book belongs to Chevalier M. Hardré, a learned and experienced man. Paris, 25 January 1727.’ A small marginal worm-eaten area on a few leaves, without damage to the text (quires M–O); the binding is rubbed but the copy is in very good condition.
