The History of Herodian, an eminent Greek historian, dealing with the memorable events of the successors to Marcus Aurelius in the Roman Empire: Translated from the Greek into French by Jacques des Comtes de Vintemille Rhodien, Councillor to the King at the Parliament of Dijon. Plus, a discourse and admonition to the Censors of the French language: With a Table of the most remarkable events. Paris, printed by Frédéric Morel, 1581. In-4 (165 x 220 mm), (28)-225-(14) pp., 1 blank page, red morocco, decorated ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, double gilt fillet on the edges, lined with the covers of the original binding in old calfskin, bearing the arms and ciphers of Conrart, double endpapers of marbled paper, slipcase edged (Thibaron) This translation by Jacques des Comtes de Vintimille is dedicated to Emmanuel-Philibert, Duke of Savoy, Prince of Piedmont. It is very beautifully executed in round letters, with a Renaissance-style frame on the title page, and large ornate initials throughout the text. It is the primary source on the reign of the Roman emperors from Marcus Aurelius to the accession of Gordian III (238), written by the Greek historian Herodian—who witnessed some of the events recounted—whilst serving as a Roman administrator. A fine edition with red line engravings, printed by Frédéric Morel, featuring a framed title page, initials, headpieces and footpieces engraved on wood. A precious copy bearing the coat of arms and cipher of Valentin CONRART (1603–1675), preserved on the endpapers. An influential man of letters, he hosted at his home the circle that became, in 1634, the Académie française, of which he was the first permanent secretary. His extensive library preserved numerous manuscripts and literary works. A superb copy with wide margins, in a splendid Thibaron binding.
