(signs a-f8 g12 A-Z8 AA-ZZ8 AAA-GGG8), stiff vellum, spine with five raised bands, handwritten title on the spine and lower edge (contemporary binding) First Latin edition prepared by Giovanni Carlo Saraceni, who signed the dedication, of the famous work by Leon Abravanel, known as Leon the Hebrew, who took refuge in Italy following the exile of 1492; one of the masterpieces of Renaissance humanist Neoplatonism. Born in Lisbon in 1460, Leon the Hebrew, also known as Judah Abravanel, followed his father Isaac Abravanel—a learned financier and legendary figure of Iberian Judaism—to Naples, where he became a physician at the viceroy’s court. Known for his works on philosophy and poetry, he taught in Rome and other Italian cities. The *Dialogues of Love* constitute his major work and are marked by the dual influence of the Neoplatonic School of Florence—notably Ficino and Pico della Mirandola—and of medieval Jewish philosophy under the aegis of Maimonides and Ibn Gabirol. A fine edition in italic type, printed in Venice by Franciscus Senensus, bearing his printer’s mark on the title page. Handwritten ex-libris in period ink reading ‘Heeris (…)’ and a stamp on the title page from the Congregation of the Oratory of St Philip Neri in Bologna, a Catholic society of apostolic life founded in Rome in the 16th century.
