LIPSE (Juste). *The Politics or Civil Doctrine of Iuste Lipsius*, which deals chiefly with matters pertaining to the Principality, together with a treatise on fortitude in bearing public afflictions. Paris, Jean Houzé, 1598.
In-12, comprising (11)-258-(5) folios, 1 blank folio, (12)-126 folios, in contemporary vellum with a cover.
Fourth edition. The second part, *On Fortitude*, is also in its fourth edition; it has been expanded to include an epitome and marginal annotations, and is dated 1608. Handwritten ex-libris on the edge.
The six books of *Politicorum sive civilis doctrinae* by the great humanist Justus Lipsius were first published in 1589. Numerous translations followed the original publication of the text, which exerted a great influence on the political thought of the time. A learned professor at Leuven, in the Spanish Netherlands, Justus Lipsius (1547–1606) had been appointed historiographer to Philip II of Spain and adviser to Archduke Albert.
