With illustrations of all the marriage alliances that have taken place in the House of Savoy, from the beginning to the present day. Lyon, Jean de Tournes, 1561. Folio, (34)-435-(1) pp., glazed light brown calfskin, plain decorated spine, title label in red morocco, blind-stamped border on the covers (19th-century binding) A fine edition by Jean de Tournes of this chronicle by the historian Paradin (1510–1590), a canon at Beaujeu Abbey. Title page adorned with a scroll-work frame known as the ‘Cadre au Midas’; woodcut depicting the arms of the House of Savoy on the frontispiece; two fold-out woodcut genealogical tables; numerous genealogical coats of arms of the House of Savoy, wood-engraved within the text; italic type for the introductory pages and roman type for the chronicle; initial letters on a perforated background. ‘A superb volume, perfectly printed. The beauty of the typeface, the printing and the paper, together with the choice and skilful use of fleurons and ornate letters from Jean de Tournes’s finest period, make this work one of his finest productions.
