Description
Pliny the Elder. C. Plinii Secundi, *Historiae mundi libri XXXVII*. Lyon, published by the Caldoriana Society, 1606. Large folio, in havana calfskin, with a ribbed spine, double frame of gilded lace with corner fleurons and gilded coats of arms at their centres (contemporary binding). The binding is heavily worn, with significant scuffing and rubbing; the head and foot caps and corners are damaged. Edition edited by Jacques Dalechamps and adorned with a fine wood-engraved bookseller’s mark on the title page. The title leaf is badly damaged. The rest of the volume is in good condition apart from a few small foxing spots and slight old water stains in places. The binding bears the coat of arms of the Collège d’Harcourt, founded in 1280 by Raoul d’Harcourt, Doctor of Law, Grand Archdeacon of Rouen and Canon of Paris, to assist poor Norman schoolboys attending the University of Paris. Generously endowed by Raoul’s brother, Robert d’Harcourt, Bishop of Coutances, the college flourished over the centuries. It received frequent endowments recorded by the Parliament of Paris and eventually admitted pupils from all the provinces of France. Abolished during the Revolution, it was re-established in 1824 by Louis XVIII under the name Collège Saint-Louis, which it still bears today. (O.H.R. 581.)
