Description
POLYBIUS. The First Five Books of the Histories of Polybius of Megalopolis, together with three sections from Book VI, one from Book VII, one from Book VIII and one from Book XVI. Previously translated and annotated by Louis Maigret, and now revised, corrected and made more complete by him from the Greek original. To which are now added the following sections from Books IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVII, all translated by him from the Greek text. Together with a plan of the Roman camp, taken from Polybius’s description. Lyon, Jean de Tournes, 1558. Folio, (16)-335-(17) pp., soft vellum with small flaps (contemporary binding) A fine impression in Roman type on fine paper. Title page adorned with a wood-engraved frame featuring a portrait of Polybius, decorated with allegorical figures; 1 engraved plate, initials, headpieces, and tailpieces engraved on wood, as well as a printer’s mark at the end of the volume. The title page is followed by a Preface by the translator, Louis Maigret (i.e. Meigret), addressed to the Nobility of France, a plan of a Roman camp on a fold-out page, and an Ode by Marc-Antoine de Muret to Lord Louïs Maigret Lionnois. Provenance: the Grand d’Hauteville library, with two bookplates, one of which bears a coat of arms: Daniel Grand de la Chaise (1761–1828), Treasurer to the King of France in Amsterdam and banker to the Swedish Court.
