Description
PROCOPIUS OF CAESAREA. History of the Wars Waged by Emperor Justinian against the Vandals and the Goths. Written in Greek by Procopius and Agathias, and translated into French by Mart. Fumée, S. de Genillé, Knight of the King’s Order. [...] Paris, Michel Sonnius, 1587.
Folio, [16] folios, [361] pp. incorrectly paginated as 359 (there are two different folios numbered 219–21), [32] pp. of annotations and errata, soft vellum, smooth spine (contemporary binding). Copy slightly out of block, with faint water-stains in the corners throughout the volume.
First edition of the French translation of Procopius’s work and its continuation by Agathias, prepared by Martin Fumée. (Brunet, IV, 897. Cioranescu, XVI, 10 289.)
Handwritten bookplate by Antoine Feydeau. It is tempting to read the name of Antoine Feydeau (c. 1577–1627) on it; he eventually came to control the bulk of the royal finances under Louis XIII, before fleeing in 1626. He had purchased the seigneury of Bois-le-Comte and, from his mansion in the Marais, presented himself as a patron of the arts; yet his contemporaries make no mention of a library having belonged to him (unlike his collection of paintings).
