Description
[Regulations on dress]. Edict of the King, regulating clothing: forbidding all his subjects from using on their garments gold, silver (whether genuine or imitation), embroidery, Milanese trimmings, or the Milanese style, and likewise from carrying out any gilding work in their homes, on pain of the penalties set out therein. Paris, Morel & Mettayer, 1613.
Small 8vo (15.8 x 9.5 cm), 13 pp., Bradel binding in brown marbled paper, title gilded lengthwise (modern binding).
A very rare sumptuary ordinance by Louis XIII enjoining ‘all members of the clergy to continue henceforth, as they do at present, to dress in modest, decent and appropriate attire for their profession, and all our other subjects to abstain from all the superfluities to which they have succumbed in the past”.
Offenders faced a fine of 1,500 livres, to be divided equally between the King, the poor and the informant… The edict also lists the exceptions, notably for belts, scabbards and equestrian equipment.
Brown morocco ex-libris on the upper inside front cover.
A fine copy.
