[RÉLY (Jean de)]. The Remonstrances presented to King Louis XI concerning the privileges of the Gallican Church, and the complaints and grievances of the people. Plus the constitution and statutes of the Knights of the Order of the Most Christian Kings of France. Including the form and order of the assembly of the Three Estates held in the city of Tours during the reign of Charles VIII, and what was presented, decided and decreed there. Paris, Vincent Sertenas, 1561. In-8, 141 folios, [2] folios of tables, with the royal arms on the verso of the last folio, blond long-grain morocco, decorated ribbed spine, bordered with fillets and broad gilded garlands on the covers with mosaic squares of fawn morocco in the spandrels, gilded edges, internal binding (Asper frères). Spine worn. Published on the occasion of the Estates of Orléans (1560–1561) and Pontoise (1561), this small volume brings together the two main political and religious interventions by the theologian Jean de Rély before Louis XI and Charles VIII: his remonstrances in favour of upholding the Pragmatic Sanction of Bourges (1461) and his speech presenting the deliberations of the Estates General of 1484. A very fine copy in a binding signed by the Geneva workshop of the Hans brothers (1852–1911) and Jacques Asper, who were active from 1874 onwards. The workshop produced artistic bindings that established the Asper Brothers as Geneva’s leading firm. A very interesting copy by the Genevan historian Gaspard-Ernest Stroehlin (1844–1907), with a fine ex-libris vignette bearing the inscription ‘Champel’ (the site of Michel Servet’s execution) and the motto ‘Mente libera’; it depicts Calvin teaching theology in St Peter’s Cathedral in Geneva. A Doctor of Theology and professor of the history of religion at the University of Geneva, Stroehlin possessed a rich library, focused mainly on Protestantism; although a staunch Calvinist, he was one of the members of the Committee for the erection of the first expiatory monument at Champel, which was eventually unveiled in 1903.
