Description
SAINT-JULIEN (Pierre de). On the Origin of the Burgundians, and the Antiquities of the Estates of Burgundy. Two books. Plus the antiquities of Autun, Chalon, Mascon, and the Abbey and town of Tournus. Paris, Nicolas Chesneau, 1581.
4 parts in 1 folio volume, [11] ff., 674 pp., [17] ff. (tables), 6 maps, fawn sheepskin, decorated ribbed spine, central gilt medallion on the centre of the covers (contemporary binding). Extensive restoration to the clasps, endpapers replaced.
A very fine 16th-century work illustrated with wood-engraved maps of the six principal towns of Burgundy — Dijon, Beaune, Autun, Mâcon, Chalon and Tournus — a plate of illuminated coats of arms and an illustration in the text showing the composition of the estates of Burgundy.
The coat of arms on the reverse of the title page was hand-coloured in its day, as was a full-page coat of arms preceding the map of Dijon.
A good copy despite a few flaws in the binding and some minor water-stains at the corners.
