SUETONE. Suetone Tranquile, *The Deeds and Acts of the Twelve Caesars*, newly printed in Paris. Paris, Arnoul L’Angelier, 1542. In-8, (8)-276 ff. (signed ã8, a-z8, &8, A-K8, L4) red morocco, embossed spine, double blind-stamped line, gilded decoration and corner motifs on the covers, interior lace, gilt edges (Capé) A fine edition of the French translation by Guillaume Michel, known as de Tours, first published by Arnoul L’Angelier in 1540. Printed in Roman type and embellished with a variety of ornate initials, it is illustrated with a small woodcut vignette at the head of the first book depicting a scribe working in his study, with his dog at his feet, as well as a fine woodcut on the title page showing an emperor in armour on horseback, with a shield bearing the double-headed eagle at his side. This woodcut, of German workmanship, is repeated at the head of each of the following eleven books, with the name of each emperor altered in the cartouche. The Angeliers’ printer’s mark on the verso of the last leaf (Renouard, no. 544), followed by their name in Gothic type on a single line. Provenance: the library of Henri Chasles (1795–1868), mayor of Chartres and Member of Parliament from 1831 to 1848. A fine copy in a binding by Capé.
