Description
[Fashion engravings]. A collection of fashion engravings. Paris, [1834–1838].
In-8 (24.5 x 17 cm), comprising 159 plates, in dark green long-grain half-maroquin, smooth spine, speckled edges (Masquillier).
A collection of 159 coloured engravings taken from various fashion magazines of the 1830s:
- 35 plates taken from the magazine *Le Bon Ton*, dated 1834 to 1836, bearing the addresses of the London booksellers Foster and Edward Bull
- 14 plates taken from *Le Petit Courrier des dames*, dated from July 1835 to October 1838
- 110 plates taken from *Le Journal des Dames et des Modes*, dated from April 1835 to the end of 1838; around twenty engravings bear a coloured label amending the address: ‘Esmeralda, the only fashion magazine in Belgium to feature engravings produced in Paris.’
Handwritten bookplate by the Chevalier de Vrière on the first endpaper, most likely Étienne (1857–1936), who served successively as mayor of Beernem, provincial councillor and then senator for West Flanders.
A few scuffs and retouching, a few plates discoloured, some foxing; otherwise a fine copy in a signed romantic binding.
