A reference work by Auguste Racinet (1825–1893) on the history of costume—civilian, religious and military—which also covers the history of jewellery, ornaments and hairstyles. The illustrations, in which the chromolithographs printed by Ambroise Firmin-Didot (1790–1876) are truly marvellous, have made this a unique document and a source of artistic inspiration in the fields of fashion and illustration.
